What is TRiM?

  • TRiM is a trauma-focused peer support system designed to help people who have experienced a traumatic, or potentially traumatic, event
  • TRiM Champions are personnel who have undergone specific training allowing them to understand the effects that traumatic events can have upon people. They are not counsellors or therapists, but understand confidentiality and are able to listen and offer practical advice and assistance
  • TRiM originated in the UK Armed Forces and the model is based on ‘active monitoring’, that means keeping a watchful eye on individuals who have been exposed to a traumatic event, whether that person has been directly involved or involved from afar.

Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) is a model which supports staff after potentially traumatic events, React Mental Health provides an opportunity to start a conversation with colleagues regarding their mental health. This training is spread over one-day in person and encompasses the two elements. TRiM Champions will join a network across Norfolk and Waveney General Practice acting as an advocate for colleagues within their Practice / PCN and will have access to quarterly supervision with a TRiM manager, the intention is to support increased trauma and mental health awareness in the workforce.

The training is composed of two elements, React Mental Health training was developed by a team of experts to enable individuals to have psychologically informed conversations and focuses on evidence-based active listening skills to increase confidence in identifying, speaking with and supporting colleagues who might have psychological health difficulties including Type 2 Trauma and Moral Injury. Trauma Risk Management training will take you through the TRiM model including an overview of the process, what makes an event psychologically traumatic, when and how to refer, exploring barriers to engagement and how we can promote help-seeking behaviour. It will also include in the moment support you can provide for staff involved in a potentially traumatic event.

To become a TRiM Champion it is a one day face to face training course in Norwich (The Willow Centre, 1 Willowcroft Way, Cringleford, Norwich NR4 7JJ – free parking at the venue)
