Aim

To equip dental practice leaders and managers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to implement effective performance reviews, ongoing feedback, and development planning that supports staff wellbeing, compliance, and practice performance.

Objectives 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the true purpose of performance reviews beyond annual appraisals
  • Apply best-practice steps for preparing and conducting fair, structured reviews
  • Use SMART objectives to support clarity, accountability, and motivation
  • Implement ongoing performance conversations using practical feedback tools
  • Conduct a skills gap analysis to identify training and development needs
  • Use the ASK framework to assess Attitude, Skills, and Knowledge effectively
  • Build and maintain meaningful Personal Development Plans (PDPs)

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the components and purpose of an effective performance review process
  • Differentiate between annual appraisals and ongoing performance conversations
  • Prepare for reviews using evidence-based information rather than opinion
  • Set and monitor SMART objectives aligned to individual and practice goals
  • Apply structured feedback models, such as BOOST, to support constructive dialogue
  • Identify skills gaps and under-utilised strengths within the dental team
  • Develop targeted, realistic PDPs that support continuous improvement
  • Recognise how effective appraisals contribute to staff retention, morale, and patient outcomes
